Neckline is one of the first things a customer notices about a sweater, and for brands it is a foundational decision that shapes styling, formality and fit. The two dominant men's necklines, crew neck and V-neck, each suit different customers and occasions. This guide compares them and helps you choose the right neckline for your range.
Neckline is not a small detail. It decides how a sweater is worn, layered and perceived, before the customer notices anything else.

| Factor | Crew neck | V-neck |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Casual, classic | Smart, layering-friendly |
| Layering | Over tees, alone | Over collared shirts |
| Formality | Casual to smart-casual | Smart-casual to formal |
| Versatility | Very high | High, dressier |
| Trend | Always core | Cyclical, preppy revivals |

The crew neck is the default men's sweater neckline: a rounded neck that sits at the base of the throat. It is the most versatile, worn alone, over a tee, or under a jacket, and reads casual to smart-casual. It suits virtually every customer, which is why it anchors most core ranges. Variations in neck height and rib depth subtly shift the look from classic to modern.
The V-neck dips to a point at the chest, designed originally for layering over a collared shirt and tie. It reads smarter and dressier, and it is the natural neckline for preppy styles like argyle, see our sweater vest guide. The depth of the V matters: a shallow V is subtle and versatile, a deep V is more fashion-forward. V-necks cycle in and out of trend, often with preppy revivals.
Whichever neckline, the rib and linking at the neck are quality markers. The neck rib must hold shape (right tension) and the linking must be clean and flat. A saggy or lumpy neckline undermines any sweater, so scrutinize it at sampling against our QC checklist. Neck construction is even more critical on turtlenecks and mock necks.
Crew and V-neck are the foundation, but your range can extend to mock necks, turtlenecks, polos, henleys and shawl collars for variety. Each neckline targets a slightly different customer and occasion, building a fuller offer.
Licheng Knitwear develops men's sweaters in crew neck, V-neck and every other neckline, with quality neck construction. Browse our sweaters or request a quote.
