A practical guide to knit gauge selection for B2B sweater, cardigan and knit jacket development.
A practical guide to knit gauge selection for B2B sweater, cardigan and knit jacket development. This guide walks you through the manufacturing journey with Licheng Knitwear.
Knit gauge describes how dense or fine the knitted structure is. In practical B2B sourcing, gauge affects garment thickness, texture, yarn consumption, production time, cost and seasonal positioning. Lower gauges create chunkier, heavier sweaters, while higher gauges create cleaner and lighter surfaces.
3GG and 5GG are commonly used for chunky winter sweaters, ribbed cardigans and cold-weather knit jackets. These gauges create strong texture and visual weight, but they also use more yarn and can increase cost. Buyers should confirm target garment weight before approving a heavy gauge sample.
7GG is a balanced option for many men's sweaters, cardigans and jacquard programs. It gives visible knit structure without becoming too heavy. For North America and Europe buyers, 7GG is often a practical starting point when the style needs warmth, texture and commercial price control.
12GG and finer gauges are useful for lightweight sweaters, minimal mock necks, cotton blends and cleaner private label programs. Fine gauge styles usually need more careful tension and finishing control because small defects are easier to see on a cleaner surface.
Gauge should not be selected only from a chart. It should be reviewed together with yarn composition, target price, season, fit, stitch structure and final market. Sending a reference garment or target weight helps the factory recommend a practical gauge for sampling.
